It’s officially the last day of the One Room Challenge, y’all! That 8 weeks feels like it flew by! Putting this recap together gave me immense appreciation for the process and deep gratitude for the creative talents I have. I’ve designed rooms in my previous homes, but this one feels different. My style has evolved a bit and I have a more technical understanding of design from learning by doing.

We’re about 75% done which means I’ll be sharing more updates over the next month or so until completion. We gotta give our budget some time to breathe, chile 😆.

In the meantime, look at this transformation! Designing a concept digitally is one thing. Seeing it come to life is another and this looks and feels like a completely different space.

Before

The Design Journey

I started brainstorming ideas for this design back in the summer, shortly after we moved into our new home and way before the ORC was on my radar. I spent a few weeks scouring the internet for the perfect light blue sectional and built the rest of the design around that. There were a few iterations of design ideas so I took a creative a break until about September once I saw the Fall ORC was around the corner.

We wanted a living room design that felt more like us and needed a better furniture layout that was more accommodating for guests.

The design direction was Refined Playful, Comfortably Creative, Gender Ambiguous. I wanted the space to have a good mix of masculine and feminine touches. I accentuated the round shapes and added in playful patterns, shades of green and brown, linen and chenille-like textures, chrome & black metals, and accents of sophisticated Black art.

Takeaways

My biggest takeaways from this challenge? Your first choice was the first for a reason, stick with it. Also, leave room for life to happen in your design timelines. This challenge was a total of 8 weeks, but four of them felt like a wash between travel, both planned and impromptu, hurricanes and hosting. And, although, our project is ongoing, we still made a huge impact with our updates.

What’s left on the to do list?

  • corner floating shelves

  • accent chair(s)

  • coffee + end tables

  • sconces + table lamp + ceiling light

  • mirror

  • accent pillows + decor

Thank You

I must say, my first ORC was definitely a success. I took an idea from my head and brought it to life. I successfully pitched two brands for product sponsorship: Ruggable and iCanvas. My following and engagement grew with consistent posting on IG and Tik Tok. I tapped back into my blogging skills and finally sent my community newsletters with my updates.

Thanks to you for following along this design journey!

While you’re here, check the ORC website for the final week 8 updates from the other participants.
